Under the leadership of Val Day, Artistic Director, and Brian Beirne, Managing Director, 59E59 Theaters presents a year-round curated program of Off Broadway plays and musicals that are nurtured and supported through highly-subsidized rental rates as well as production, ticketing, FOH, marketing, and press support.

ABOUT PROSPECT THEATER COMPANY

PROSPECT THEATER COMPANY is dedicated to fostering and showcasing today's new voices shaping tomorrow's musicals. Over two decades, the company has premiered more than 35 musicals in New York City, in addition to new plays and numerous re-inventions of classic works. THE SEMI-STAGED PRODUCTION FOR DEAF AND HEARING AUDIENCES WILL DRAW ON THE EXPRESSIVE POWER OF AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) AND BEETHOVEN’S MUSIC TO
TELL THE TIMELY TALE OF TRIUMPH OVER OPPRESSION

Los Angeles, CA
(March 10, 2022) — From April 14-16, 2022, Los Angeles Philharmonic Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel will conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic and a star-studded cast in a groundbreaking event directed by Alberto Arvelo, co-directed by Joaquín Solano, and produced in collaboration with Los Angeles’s acclaimed, Tony Award®-winning Deaf West Theatre (Artistic Director DJ Kurs) and Deaf performers of El Sistema’s Coro de Manos Blancas (White Hands Choir) in a new production of Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Created for both Deaf and hearing audiences, the semi-staged production draws on both American Sign Language’s (ASL) expressive, gestural poetry and Beethoven’s music to tell the powerful tale of redemption and liberation. The idea for the production was originally developed by Gustavo Dudamel through his Foundation, which he co-chairs with his wife, actress María Valverde, as a means of elevating Deaf artistry to illuminate the opera’s central theme: the fight to overcome obstacles in order to discover one’s own personal freedom. Fidelio premiered in 1805 as Beethoven was reckoning with his own Deafness.

Gustavo Dudamel said, “All art is rooted in the deeply human need to communicate something, and to have that communication be received and felt. Fidelio is perhaps Beethoven's purest expression of our ability to overcome adversity, and to reach one another across a seemingly insurmountable divide. That belief in the transformative, transcendent power of music is at the heart of this production, where we have partnered with the extraordinary artists of Deaf West Theatre and the Coro de Manos Blancas, in order to offer a performance with equal resonance to both Deaf and hearing audiences, and remind us that there is always light through the darkness.”

DJ Kurs, Artistic Director of Deaf West Theatre, said, “Rarely do the opera houses and concert halls throughout the world open their doors to the Deaf community. Together with the LA Phil we have been able to create an experience that brings new facets of music to Deaf and hearing audiences. Fidelio is Deaf West Theatre’s first opera and in thinking about the production we kept returning to the fact that for the Deaf community, music transcends sound. This is something Beethoven knew well and is why he cut the legs off his piano so that he could feel the vibrations of the music on the floor as he lost his own hearing. Movement and language are additional portals to music and with the combination of Beethoven’s powerful score and ASL we are able to offer Deaf audiences an entry into the world of opera. ASL, the central medium of our staging, is an expressive visual language filled with nuance, movement, and poetry that can bring music to life in new ways, creating a synthesis that brings all audiences together.”

The acclaimed cast features Amelia Hensley (actor) and Christiane Libor (soprano) as Leonore, Josh Castille (actor) and Ian Koziara (tenor) as Florestan, Russell Harvard (actor) and Ryan Speedo Green (bass-baritone) as Rocco, Indi Robinson (actor) and Gabriella Reyes (soprano) as Marzelline, Gregor Lopes (actor) and José Simerilla-Romero (tenor) as Jaquino, Gabriel Silva (actor) and Shenyang (bass-baritone) as Don Pizarro, and Michael Anthony Spady (actor) and Ethan Vincent (baritone) as Don Fernando. The Los Angeles Master Chorale is led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, and Artistic Director María Inmaculada Velásquez is directing the Coro de Manos Blancas. The entire performance will be signed and sung, with subtitles also provided.

Thursday’s performance (April 14) is generously supported by the Frank Gehry Fund for Creativity and is part of the Otis Booth Foundation Thursday 2 Series. The Friday and Saturday (April 15 and 16) performances are generously supported by an Edgerton Foundation grant.

Additional support for the Coro de Manos Blancas comes from the Dudamel Foundation.

New York, NY (March 10, 2022) – The OPC, an original scripted podcast series focusing on ageism, created and written by Richard Curtis, has released its third and fourth episodes, each under 15 minutes, now available on all streaming platforms.

Previously on The OPC, Bernard Bentlee’s family has been investigating a project called The OPC, that the 83 year-old patriarch has been developing in secret. His ex-son-in-law, Leonard, finds out, from a woman of dubious reputation, that the old man has been asking a lot of questions about the sex life of senior citizens. Bernard Bentlee’s daughter Annette gets a clue from a lawyer that this is ‘bigger than anything you can imagine,’ while his granddaughter Ashley learns from a talent agent that he has been seeing a lot of models.

Episode Three, “What’s a Heaven For?”, begins with Bernard Bentlee entertaining the models in his study, as his family gathers outside his door, determined to confront him.

In Episode Four, “The Showrunner”, Ashley goes to spy on her grandfather’s secret activities.

A modern twist on the classic radio play format, The OPC is equal parts comedy and heart. Easy to binge and hard to forget, this is one podcast that will leave you wanting more. (And more is on the way: a second season is being scripted.)

The OPC is a Mozine Productions podcast, created and written by executive producer Richard Curtis and produced and directed by Megan Simard, with technical production, sound design, and music by Steve Mecca.

The cast of The OPC features Loni Ackerman, Opal Besson, Victoria Bundonis, Joe Cosentino, Peter Dichter, Dianna Dudley, Todd Faulkner, Kerry Frances, David Gibson, Nicole Greevy, Cary Hite, Shonita Joshi, Jamie Lee Kearns, Bunny Levine, Todd Lewis, Hilary Mann, Sevans Martinez, Steve Mecca, Kris Paredes, Marina Re, Merritt Reid, Peter Reznikoff, Richard Sacher, Megan Simard, Dick Terhune, Dan Truman, Jenne Vath, and Dathan B. ABOUT EVAN RUGGIERO

Evan Ruggiero recently portrayed The Beast in Olney Theatre Center’s production of Disney’s Beauty & The Beast. Evan began dancing at the age of five in his hometown studio and by age ten, he was accepted into the famed New Jersey Tap Ensemble. Upon entering his sophomore year at Montclair State University while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, Evan was suddenly diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer of the right leg. Enduring nine surgeries in a six-month period in an effort to save the leg, the cancer returned more aggressively than the original diagnosis. He was faced with the ultimate decision of amputation in order to stop the cancer and save his life, as well as undergoing chemotherapy for sixteen months. Eighteen months after the amputation, and only two days after receiving his “peg-leg”, Evan was tap dancing again. In 2018 he received a Drama Desk Nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, a Chita Rivera Award Nomination for Best Dancer in a Musical, and was awarded a Clive Barnes Award in Theatre for his portrayal of Tom Jones in NYC’s off-broadway hit Bastard Jones. Recently, he was seen performing at Carnegie Hall and at the 90th Oscars. He has performed for many notable individuals such as Ellen Degeneres, President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Egypt’s sixth and current president, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and most recently performed alongside two-time Grammy winning artist, Jason Mraz. You’re in the right place.

BILL NELSON’S BIG HAPPY DEPRESSION SHOW
Winner of Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment New Voice Project
A Fun, Funny and Honest Evening of Brand New Songs

7:00pm
/ Tickets begin at $15

Judith Light started it. Ya know her—from TV's “Who's The Boss?” She taught a very confessy class to help writers get past their blocks. At the feet of Angela Bower, BILL NELSON admitted out loud for the first time that he'd been tangoing with depression. As if on cue, nearly everyone else in the room confessed the same thing. Learning how common it is amongst writer types, Bill knew he needed to be wide open about it, and to do so in the Bill-Nelsoniest way possible.

Poor, lonely depression is stigmatized and not often talked about despite over sixteen million Americans experiencing its funkiness. This evening of songs—about everything in depression's orbit—shatters the silence. You might guffaw, possibly learn a little somethin’ new, potentially let a single tear sexily streak down your cheek, and likely leave with joy in your heart and a tune in your head.

Lyrics are by Bill Nelson with music by a collection of some of the best composers on the planet: Rick Bassett, Ben Boecker, Joanna Burns, Christiana Cole, Marialena DiFabbio, Mátti Kovler, André McCrae, Angelique Mouyis, Bradford Proctor, Willem Oosthuysen, David Shenton, Jason Sirois, Joseph Trefler, Niko Tsakalakos, and Jon Hugo Ungar.

Featuring CHRISTIANA COLE, NATALIE JOY JOHNSON (Kinky Boots), HASSAN NAZARI-ROBATI, LORA NICOLAS, CATHLEEN OLIVA, ROBERT LEE POOLE III, HEATHCLIFF SAUNDERS (Company), JASON SIROIS, JON HUGO UNGAR, and BRIANA YOUNG. JASON SIROIS - musical director, co-producer, vocalist

A portion of the profits benefit Mental Health America (MHA).

SALLY SHAW

2021 Playbill’s Search for a Star Winner
In her NYC Debut Solo Show!

7:00pm
/ Tickets begin at $15

How do you debut? If I wait long enough to figure it out, it won't be a debut anymore. So here we go! Sally here! This show is a collection of songs and stories about how the world ended and my life began. A paradox so bizarre I want to bust out laughing or break down crying whenever I think about it. Which is very often. Now that may seem like a mixed bag, but I think those two reactions are far closer to one another than I give them credit for. The two-sided-ness of life has been anything but subtle lately, so the heart of this show is centered around Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." I want to invite you to celebrate and reflect on the absurd and unpredictable beauty of life as we hit the 2-year mark in the pandemic. Joyful, poignant, and hopeful. Folky, classic and theatrical. You may only know me from my 1-minute Playbill submission, but, boy oh boy, is there more to the story! I can't wait to meet you. Buckle up and let's have some fun.

In the midst of pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre from Ithaca College, SALLY SHAW won Playbill’s 2022 Search for a Star with her 1-minute submission of “Stay” from Amélie. NYC credit: Sasha Velour’s Nightgowns: The Musical (Stagehand) at the Connelly Theatre. Regional credits: The Snow Queen (Greta - nominated for a 2019 S.A.L.T. award) at the Cherry Arts, and What Haunts You (Girl) with Clockmaker Arts at the Kitchen Theatre. And when she’s not onstage, you can catch her on the road making costumes or managing merch for Brooklyn’s grooviest band, Sammy Rae & the Friends.

Eleanor Rigby is Waiting (24 strangers. 24 hours. 1 chance to connect) by award-winning author David James Parr is a kaleidoscopic romantic comedy-drama consisting of a mosaic of interconnected vignettes, exploring different shades of human emotion. A boundless experience combined with an evocative live music performance by singer-songwriter Hadiza Dockeray invites the audience each night on a unique date with surprising characters and one chance to connect with an array of strangers, played by a group of versatile powerhouse actors in an interconnected portrait of love, lust, and longing in our modern world.

The show was initially inspired by the lyrics of the popular song by The Beatles: “Ah, look at all the lonely people. Where did they all come from?” Edward Albee famously got his cryptic title for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? from a bathroom mirror in a West Village restaurant where these words were scrawled. A central character in Parr’s play similarly sees the phrase Eleanor Rigby Is Waiting written in lipstick on a bathroom mirror and begins to ruminate about its origin. Is it about loneliness? Is it about hope? And how long, exactly, can you keep a person waiting before they break?

New York, NY
& Salt Lake City, UT (February 23, 2022) — Deaf West Theatre (David Kurs, Artistic Director) is proud to partner with the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind (USDB) and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Sunshine 2.0 for the 2022 National Deaf High School Theatre Festival (NDHSTF), an educational theatrical competition for young Deaf actors across the United States.

The NDHSTF gives young Deaf performers the ability to perform on a national stage, refine their skills through competition and feedback, use American Sign Language (ASL) as their medium for acting, experience professional theatre in an accessible language, and socialize with like-minded Deaf peers.

Building on the work started by USDB and Sunshine 2.0 in 2020, where an entirely virtual festival was hosted with about one hundred Deaf students participating from across the country, Deaf West Theatre joins with them to create a truly rich and unique experience that will bring Deaf artists from across the country. The lineup includes instructors from Sunshine 2.0, a theatre company based at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

The 2022 National Deaf High School Theatre Festival will feature students from over 10 schools across the country, including American School for the Deaf, Arkansas School for the Deaf, Berkmar High School, Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, Montana School for the Deaf & Blind, Oklahoma School for the Deaf, Rocky Mountain Deaf School, School of the Arts at Central Gwinnett High School, Texas School for the Deaf, and Utah School for the Deaf and Blind.

Instructors and guest performers for the 2022 National Deaf High School Theatre Festival include Zain Ahmed (NTID Sunshine 2.0), Shiann Cook (NTID Sunshine 2.0), SAG Award nominee Daniel Durant (CODA, Spring Awakening), Tyler Fortson (NTID Sunshine 2.0), Harold Foxx (Stand-Up Comedian), Natasha Ofili (“The Politician”), Fred Beam (NTID Sunshine 2.0), Lateefah Patterson (NTID Sunshine 2.0), and David Kurs (Deaf West Theatre).

“For many years, our students from USDB had been competing in other theatre festivals for high school students,” said Michelle Tanner, Associate Superintendent of the Deaf at USDB. “The accessibility needs of our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students were never fully met, and in some instances completely negated. This led to overall lack-of-interest and outright protest from many of our students. After looking around and seeing that there were no other Deaf theatre competitions for high school students, we decided to launch our own annual National Deaf High School Theatre Festival.”

“Deaf West has always been committed to bridging the gap between the Deaf and hearing worlds, and when we found out the accessibility needs of students were being completely ignored, we knew we needed to help. Bringing this Festival from completely virtual to a virtual/in-person hybrid experience is no small undertaking, but is vital for our community. Deaf West’s expertise and history, combined with the resources that USDB and Sunshine 2.0 provide, will help ensure this Festival will become an annual tradition that showcases the true power of Deaf and Hard of Hearing thespians” said David Kurs, Artistic Director of Deaf West Theatre.

“We are excited to be partnering with Deaf West and USDB to present this necessary artistic platform for young adults,” said Fred Michael Beam, Coordinator at Sunshine 2.0. “Our 40+ year expertise is in bringing Deaf theatrical talent on the road, not just in America but across the world. This national festival will help elevate and amplify this young, emerging Deaf talent.”

The 2nd National Deaf High School Theatre Festival will be a hybrid virtual and in-person festival. Both will take place March 10-13, 2022, with the in-person festival being held at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind’s campus in Salt Lake City.

Participants will submit an entry in one or more categories that will be judged by Deaf West Theatre and Sunshine 2.0 performers and other Deaf professionals in the field of acting. The following day workshops will be provided by Deaf West Theatre and Sunshine 2.0, and other professionals in Deaf theatre to develop students’ performance skills. The event will include competition in the following categories; drama, music, dance, and Visual Vernacular.

For more information, to submit for consideration, and for complete Festival rules and guidelines, please visit DeafWest.org/Festival.

ABOUT THE UTAH SCHOOLS FOR THE DEAF AND BLIND

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) has been serving students with sensory impairments throughout Utah for over 100 years! The schools began in 1884 by the Territorial Legislature after a message from Governor Eli Murray which emphasized the need for a school for the deaf. Twelve years later in 1896, as Utah attained statehood, the members of the Constitutional Convention created the school for the blind. Recognizing the appropriateness of services for both visually and hearing-impaired individuals, Utah’s first lawmakers established the “Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.” USDB was given their first home at Ogden’s old Territorial Reform School.

The courageous spirit that provided a national model for deaf and blind education in 1884 is still forging the way in teaching the deaf and the blind to be self-reliant and contributing citizens of their communities. Outreach and mainstreaming efforts offer students an educational program whereby each individual can progress toward his or her highest potential.

Over the years, services provided by the USDB have continued to meet the changing needs of students and families through modern technology and teaching strategies. The commitment of the schools to high quality services for deaf and blind children is as great as it ever was.

New York, NY (February 17, 2022) – The OPC – short for The Old People’s Channel – an original scripted podcast series focusing on ageism, created and written by Richard Curtis, has completed production with a cast of 30 and will debut next week on Thursday, February 24th, available on all streaming platforms.

Season One of The OPC introduces Bernard Bentlee, a wealthy octogenarian who has invested his fortune, and his family’s inheritance, in a risky new media venture. Is he living a pipe dream and destroying his family’s future, as his daughter Annette accuses? Or is he a genius whose vision bridges the generation gap, fully supported by his Gen Z granddaughters?

Williams.

“I created The OPC not just for an older audience but a younger one as well. For, as our hero Bernard Bentlee says, ‘young people are old people in training’. The most gratifying response to the series has come from the young actors, who told me that The OPC brought them closer to their grandparents and other elderly people,” says author Richard Curtis. “I think you’ll recognize and enjoy many of the characters young, old, and middle-aged that you meet in The OPC. Indeed, maybe you’ll come away agreeing with me that the aged are society’s most precious resource.”

“When Richard first told me about his idea for The OPC, I knew that I had to do whatever I could to get this project off the ground,” says director Megan Simard. “We’re living in an era of major social transition, and The OPC depicts our generational differences with so much authenticity and honesty that I am certain it will appeal to a broad audience. There’s something for everyone in this show! Directing The OPC has been a thrill and I cannot wait for our listeners to hear the stellar cast of thirty voice actors who worked so hard to bring Richard’s script to life.”

“Since the beginning of our journey with The OPC, I've just begun to understand the nuances of what it truly means to be ‘old’ in America - and that it's far more complicated than I ever imagined,” says technical producer and sound engineer Steve Mecca. “Working on this show has given me a new sense of purpose; and that is to help open the eyes of younger generations so that everyone can find a new sense of respect for our more experienced citizens, and for the next in line to feel just a little better about growing old in America.”

FINAL WEEK TO SEE

“ODD MAN OUT”

A LIVE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE IN COMPLETE DARKNESS

THROUGH FEBRUARY 18

AT THE FLEA THEATER

PHOTOS & ARTWORK AVAILABLE HERE

New York, NY
(February 11, 2022) – Odd Man Out, a live immersive experience in complete darkness, enters its final week of performances at The Flea Theater’s The Pete Theater (20 Thomas Street), with its final performance set for Friday, February 18 at 9:00pm. Presented by PITCHBLACK Immersive Experiences, Odd Man Out is written by Martín Bondone and directed by Bondone, Carlos Armesto, and Facundo Bogarín.

Odd Man Out is a LIVE immersive play in darkness. It begins when “passengers” enter a dimly lit space guided by a flight attendant. Passengers put on their headphones and their blindfolds. From there, the story allows listeners to immerse themselves in the tale of Alberto, a blind musician flying home from New York to Buenos Aires, Argentina, after decades of self-exile. As listeners enter Alberto’s story of love, prejudice and fears that were left behind, they experience a 360-surround sound, multisensory “journey.”

Because passengers are blindfolded through the entire duration of the flight, the action can be experienced by way of auditory stimulation, tactile objects and enriched smells. VIP passengers will be able to have their sense of taste piqued as well. All passengers will even feel weather happening around them. This experience engages and awakens the senses, tests limits, and ultimately uses the darkness to bring the audience to a new light.

Odd Man Out began at Teatro Ciego in Argentina, which has a 15-year history of creating live experiences in complete darkness. The theater company employs artists and technicians with visual disabilities in all their work. Forty percent of staff and creative teams are made up of blind and low-vision individuals.

A portion of the proceeds from the Odd Man Out will go to Visions (www.visionsvcb.org), which provides services for the blind and visually impaired.

The cast of Odd Man Out features Gonzalo TriguerosNael Raza, Ignacio BorderesAlejandra Buljevich, Holly ConnorAndrés MontejoCarmen BorlaModesto Lacen, Victoria Raigorodsky, and Aksel Tang.

Odd Man Out features original music, arrangements, and music direction by Mirko Mescia, sound design by Nicolas Álvarez, dramaturgy by Carlos Armesto and Aksel Tang, and storytelling revisions by Matias Guzman. NY producers are Carlos Armesto (lead producer), Lola Lopez Guardone (executive producer), and Malcolm March (associate producer). Jonathan Vidal and Lucila Brindisi are Directors of Marketing and Communications and the disability consultant is Alie Gorrie.

Odd Man Out premiered at Teatro Ciego in October 2019 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Performed by six actors entirely in the dark, Odd Man Out relied on binaural immersive sound design, a delicate choreography and the innovative use of smell and touch to create the landscape of its world and characters with a cast composed of majority artists that have either partial or complete vision loss.

Following the Spanish production in Argentina, Teatro Ciego partnered with theatreC to premiere Odd Man Out in the U.S. in February, 2020 at an English-Language workshop presentation. The cast of American actors rehearsed in Argentina and presented excerpts from the play at the American Embassy in preparation for a New York Production. This was followed by a production at The Flea Theater in New York in November and December of 2021.

Tickets for the Odd Man Out LIVE immersive experience are $50 with “First Class” VIP seating available for $90. Odd Man Out plays at The Flea Theater Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 7pm; Fridays at 7pm and 9pm; Saturdays at 3pm, 7pm, and 9pm; and Sundays at 3pm.

Odd Man Out is also presented as an at home immersive experience where people are sent a box to their home with all the elements required to experience the play.

Senior and Student tickets are available for $35 and patrons must present supporting ID. All passengers must present proof of vaccination upon arrival. First class passengers receive an extra VIP experience prior to the main show, a VIP reception with refreshments, advance entrance to the space (premier boarding), and a souvenir.

New York, NY
(February 11, 2022) – Announced today is the world premiere of Here There Be Dragons – A New Musical Quest, inspired by the classic tabletop fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Featuring book and lyrics by Chase O’Neill, music by Theo Teris, orchestrations by Scott Wasserman (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen), and direction by Austin Harleson, Here There Be Dragons is set to premiere at The Players Theatre (115 MacDougal Street) with performances beginning Thursday, June 16, and set to run through Sunday July 17, 2022.

The night before their college graduation, a tight-knit group of Dungeons and Dragons players embark on their final quest. They must contend with their anxieties, fears, and obstacles, manifested as fantasy monsters and locales, to discover what their futures may hold. This musical quest will take audiences on a journey through the trepidation and excitement of growing up, holding on to what's dear, and moving forward in life without our "swords".

"In college I met my best friends, playing seemingly endless sessions of the 3.5 edition of Dungeons & Dragons. We still play together to this day. Theo and I wrote this show because of the impact our friends from college, and even high school, had on both of us. This show is about the strength it takes to choose one's friends and the struggles that must be overcome to make lasting connections. We're thrilled to share this story, as the enduring nature of friendship is something we herald as essential to life. There's a world to explore, best have your party by your side to face it. Now, roll for initiative!" said writer Chase O'Neill.

Additional information, including complete cast and creative team, will be announced shortly.

Here There Be Dragons will play the following schedule: Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7pm; and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets begin at $47 and are available at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/1089995.
